Once upon a time, Southern Californians would cruise Interstate 10 towards Palm Springs – or, perhaps en route to Phoenix – and wonder what it would be like to live a little closer to these destinations. Maybe they visualized a city where a round of golf could be enjoyed in the sunshine, or hoped for a community with pleasant suburban neighborhoods that rivaled those of Orange County. If so, they were envisioning what Beaumont is today.
Although it’s existed under its current name for nearly a century, the city of Beaumont has spent the last decade becoming an emblem of the California dream. With the housing boom of the early 2000s, the urban sprawl that reached the last remaining valleys of the Inland Empire extended into Beaumont and its neighboring cities (most notably Banning). In fact, it was noted that Beaumont was among the fastest growing cities in the state during this period.
With that in mind, the city’s commitment to preserving local history and the structures that signify it is all the more impressive. In fact, they not only preserve history; they promote it, through partnerships with the film industry. The Inland Empire Film Commission (IEFC), which promotes filming opportunities throughout the inland valley, has successfully assisted Beaumont with its efforts to bring film and television operations to the city – most recently, the NBC sitcom “My Name is Earl.”
